Developer of PureBSD PureBSD is developed by Alex who works part-time as a software developer and system administrator for a Dutch software company in The Netherlands. He has studied computer science, informatics and now psychology at a university. Goals of PureBSD On this website I'd like to share my own experiences with the OpenBSD and FreeBSD operating systems with others. Because I don't have any fancy hardware nor resources to buy them, I will not cover any topics related to SCSI, CPUs other than the i386, etc. I only write about topics I have a personal experience with. Contributed texts/scripts/etc are more than welcome though. I think of my own topics to cover, but I think that you can help me with questions. If certain topics are not covered or not clear to you, don't you dare hesitate to email me about it. Submit those questions, so that the quality and usefulness of this site --to you and to others-- gets better. Choices Server. I wanted a stable server operating system which should be Secure By Default (SBD). Of course with multi tasking, multi user and networking capabilities. Furthermore, it had to do NAT, packtet filtering and provide a miriad of services to the intranet AND the internet. While running DHCP, DNS, WWW, STMP, POP3, SQL on a packtet filtering NAT internet gateway is a Not So Good Idea But I Have No Other Choice, I wanted it even more to be SBD. My choice fell (obviously?) on OpenBSD. Well, not so obviously after all. I had to reburn my Linuxized harddisk with OpenBSD 2.7 a long, long time ago. I have nothing against Linux. Relax, it's just an OS. Workstation. I wanted a rock solid Unix-like operating system for my workstation. It should be able to handle normal consumer i386 hardware. It had to be an operating system for which there is an abundance of applications available. It had to be clean and well designed system (pure personal taste). I had to be able to develop all kinds of things on it. My choice was Linux. I did not know about other systems. Eventually I got sick of about all things related to Linux. As of May 2001, I kicked Linux of my workstation and put FreeBSD on the smoking remains. So I'll add FreeBSD content on PureBSD too, but this time workstation centered. I have nothing against Linux. Relax, it's just an OS. Last, but not least Thanks, and have fun! |
